Preparing students for a lifetime of safe and healthy computer use
|
Whether you're a teacher, lecturer or parent, preparing students for a healthy working life is one of your key concerns
Today's students are expected to spend more time using computers than ever before. Promoting good posture and computer habits has never been more important
PostureMinder Education Edition has been developed as a simple and cost-effective way to teach and reinforce good posture habits for students of all ages. It provides ergonomic advice tailored to support educators, including simple self-assessment questions to highlight any developing health problems.
Intelligent, targeted posture reminders then act to remind students whenever they sit in a poor posture for a minute or two at a time, reducing time spent in damaging postures and reinforcing good habits. Find out how it works here
The appearance of PostureMinder Education Edition can also be personalised by students, which encourages young children in particular to pay greater attention to reminders when they appear
A recent study (Alexander and Currie 2004) of over 4000 11-15 year old schoolchildren by the University of Edinburgh Child and Adolescent Health Unit found that:
- 60% of regular computer users reported frequent headaches
- over 40% reported frequent neck pain or shoulder pain
- around 15% suffered frequent back pain
Although other issues such as carrying heavy schoolbags are obviously a factor for schoolchildren, a clear correlation was found between the amount of computer use and the incidence of these problems
With many years of computer use ahead for our children, surely we need to start improving posture and computer habits in schools, colleges and universities? We can't afford to wait and hope that they'll receive training when they join the workforce to undo damage done and bad habits developed during childhood
