Postureminder for all the family
Recent surveys by the British Chiropractic Association have shown an alarming increase in self-reported back pain amongst UK schoolchildren. 45% of 11-18 year olds reported suffering back pain in their 2008 survey, a 55% increase in just 6 years on the 29% figure found in an identical survey in 2002.
The most obvious change during that period, which may account for the increase, has been the rapid growth in home broadband and social networking websites, which has led to a large increase in computer use by children in recent years. This is the first generation for which regular computer use is seen as "cool" or essential.
The impact may already be being seen in the workforce. According to the 2007 ViewSonic @Work @Risk survey, whilst 71% of computer workers reported back pain, this figure rose to 80% amongst 16-24 year olds.
